Itineraries by foot
Roman Forum Rome

Towards the West, less than 1 km away you will find the most famous monument of Rome: the Colosseum and the great archaeological area of Roman Forum, the Holy Way, the Palatine Hill, and the Traianei Markets. A route weaving its way among the capital’s celebrated sites, starting with the Colosseum. Soak up the atmosphere of ancient Rome in all its splendour, in the very streets which made this city “eternal”.

Basilica San Giovanni in Laterano

Towards the South you will find the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Basilica of San Giovanni and the Lateranensi Palaces. It is a route unwinding between two splendid piazzas: the eighteenth century square fanning out before the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, which has become by some strange turn of fate the lay meeting point for demonstrations which regularly take places here and that of the Church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme with its adjoining Museum of Musical Instruments.

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore Rome

You cross the Rione Monti which was the most densely populated area in ancient Rome, a labyrinth of alleyways, small shops and markets. Today it continues to keep this popular connotation accompanied, however, by a most innovative side that make the slums one of the most innovative areas of the City, full of bars and restaurants. Ruling sovereign over the entire district is the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore overlooking the piazza of the same name.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele

The gardens – between history and legend

In the middle of the square there is a big garden (recently restored) that exposes remains of the so called Marios’ trophies: a ruin of a fountain from the Severian Age. The remains of the antique Villa of Prince Poniatowsky, a noble of Polish origin and famous alchemist of ‘700, where the “Magic Door“, gives more interest in visiting the park. You can find alchemic symbols on the ancient pillars, and the legend says that there is a magic formula hidden there about transforming simple metals into gold!

To visit around

Around the park there are several stands to drink something and flower stands and in the surroundings of Piazza Vittorio you find plenty of restaurants, some of them are the most important ones of Rome. Close to Piazza Vittorio, in Principe Eugenio Street, you find “Il Palazzo del Freddo” the most antique ice cream shop in Italy, renowned in the world for an excellent artisan ice cream. The building exposes objects and documents that tell of the history of Italy. It is worth a visit is the Esquilino market, that once was in Piazza Vittorio and nowadays is in a building close to the square. The Romans call it “the producers’ market”: A lovely mix with fresh and tasty products from the local farmers, Indians and Middle Eastern salesmen.

The events and the summer cinema

During the summer season Piazza Vittorio offers music festivals and open-air cinema together with several theatrical, photographical and artistic events. All these events enrich Piazza Vittorio with magic and creative energy.

History and architecture

The architect Kock projected today’s square between 1882 and 1887: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, centre of Rione Esquilino. It was named after the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II.
Piazza Vittorio, as it is called more commonly, is a wide rectangular square completely surrounded by arcades in Piemontese style, the only one of this type in Rome and with its dimensions of 316×147 side meters, is one of the biggest squares of the Capital.

The famous Band and the “spirit of the square”

The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio, also well known through a successful film with the same name, represents probably better than anything else the real spirit of Piazza Vittorio: A cosmopolitan melting-pot, active and able to express a high level of culture and art.

Entertaiment in the area

We are pleased to be able to suggest several place around the Hotel Napoleon in which to spend your evenings. In the area you can find several good restaurants, pubs and trendy clubs. Many places frequented until late are in the Monti district, 500 meters from Piazza Vittorio, and at 1 km in the district of San Lorenzo, once a workers quarter and today a popular neighbourhood in particular among young people and students.
